The City of Helen Municipal Court convenes at City Hall on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 4.00pm. The Justice Council of Georgia has produced a Basic Rules for Court Conduct information document that can help guide all persons attending court.

What to Expect in Court

On your court date:

  • Arrive on time.

  • Plan to remain in court for four to five hours.

  • Cell phones should be off or in silent mode.

  • Please dress appropriately. Appropriate apparel does not include:

    • shorts

    • tank tops

    • hats (other than for religious purposes)

    • non-prescription sunglasses

    • low cut or see-through clothing.

  • The judge and prosecutor will conduct a general speech explaining general information.

  • Your charges will be read to you and you will be asked how you would like to plea to the charges (guilty, not guilty, or nolo).

  • If desired, you will have an opportunity to speak with the prosecutor in court after first waiving your rights to an attorney.

  • You will have an opportunity to reschedule your case to seek legal advice, etc.

  • Court staff cannot provide legal advice.

Discuss Case with Judge / Prosecutor

Do you desire to discuss a case with the judge or prosecutor?

  • The judge will discuss the case during court and according to laws governing such communications.

  • The prosecutor is not available to discuss cases except during court and only after you have waived your rights to an attorney.

Driver History & Points

In certain instances, conviction of a moving violation results in points being assessed to your driver history.  The Department of Driver Services determines which offenses result in the assessment of points and the number of points to be assessed for those offenses.  To determine possible points that could result from a conviction, see Department of Driver Services Points.

The Department of Driver Services website is available for the following services:

  • To check the status of your driver's license;

  • To determine if your license has been placed in suspension;

  • To pay reinstatement fees online;

  • To access other pertinent information related to driving laws in Georgia.

The Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety website provides additional information to educate the public on safe driving behaviors.  Please visit their site for more information.

Failure to Appear in Court

If you fail to appear in court on your assigned court date:

  • A warrant for your arrest may be issued.

  • An additional contempt of court fine may be incurred.

  • Your drivers' license may be suspended.

You may receive notice of license suspension or warrant issued for failure to appear. Contact the court office for information regarding resolution of such.

Rescheduling Court Dates

Rescheduling of court dates can occur under certain conditions:

  • Your case cannot be continued to another date by telephone.

  • Court staff cannot continue cases that are marked as mandatory appearance. These defendants may request a continuance from the courtroom on the assigned court date.

  • Court staff cannot continue your case except in the following circumstances:  there has been a death in your immediate family (must provide proof) or,

  • You are having COVID-like symptoms or within 14 days of your scheduled court date you have tested positive or are waiting on results, please contact our office at 706-878-2733.
